Keeping Your Headstone Maintained
A headstone is most commonly found in cemeteries and churchyards. Headstones were created to represent people that have passed away in a way that remembers them and honours their life.
At South Wales Monuments, we design and craft memorials and headstones. With over 30 years of experience, we have a team full of experienced craftsmen and memorial fitters. We serve the entirety of South Wales and have crafted headstones for hundreds of people in the local area.
Read on to find out our advice in regards to keeping a headstone maintained – we hope it helps!
Regularly Visit the Headstone
To ensure your headstone is well looked after, we would highly recommend that you visit the cemetery regularly. If the headstone is for your loved one then it is likely that you will already be visiting it fairly regularly, so maintenance shouldn’t be too difficult.
Giving the headstone a regular check-up will allow you to see if it requires any cleaning or repairs. This will also give you the peace of mind that the headstone is still in good condition and has not been damaged. It may also provide you with comfort if you choose to visit the headstone regularly. Not only does it encourage maintenance, but it can also help with the healing process.
Clean It with Care
Depending on what material your headstone is, there are different recommendations for how you should clean it. You’ll want to sure that you use the right cleaning solutions in order to preserve the headstone and to keep it looking good.
For granite headstones, you will usually only need dishwashing liquid and warm water in order to clean it. General cleaning is quite simple when it comes to most headstone materials. If there are rust or water-based stains then this may require more rigorous cleaning with some form of bleach.
When cleaning with dishwashing liquid and water, ensure you are gentle with the cleaning. This will allow you to clean the headstone properly whilst also making sure you don’t damage it.
Cleaning is typically required once every 6 months, however, this will entirely depend on the conditions that the headstone is kept in. This can be affected by the weather, materials and the area that the headstone is in.
Get Damages Repaired
In the unlikely event that your headstone gets damaged, you’ll want to make sure that you get the damaged repaired as soon as possible. You may also find that your headstone suffers from wear and tear after a while, which is unavoidable.
If the damage is left and unattended to, it could cause further damage. We would recommend that you contact an experienced memorial repair company before doing anything as they will be able to advise you on damages and provide you with guidance on the next steps.
Memorial repair is complex and therefore you should always speak to a professional first.
Our After Care Service
At South Wales Monuments we offer a comprehensive Memorial After Care package to help our customers look after their headstones. If you find that you don’t have time to visit the cemetery or churchyard, it is definitely worth considering purchasing this.
The After Care package will help to keep your headstone or memorial in pristine condition. Once purchased, our expert craftsmen will tend to your memorial several times during the year. They will always make sure that your headstone is in good condition. You can also purchase insurance for your memorial which we would also recommend.
