Choosing a Headstone That Suits the Commemoration of Your Loved One
A headstone is a feature that is a stone or slate marker which is placed at the head of a grave in the cemetery area. In addition to the person’s name and life dates – you may choose to include an epitaph representing text symbolic to that person, their life or their memory. When a loved one passes away – we understand that this is a highly difficult time for you and your family. You therefore shouldn’t worry about some of the natural concerns that may arise when choosing a headstone and epitaph. Some of the common concerns or issues that family members may encounter are the following:
- If your loved one did not express their requirements or preferences for their funeral or commemorative headstone – you may be concerned that the choices may be something that they didn’t want.
- You may feel burdened about having to make decisions relating to the above.
- You may feel worried or concerned that you are taking a lot of time to choose the appropriate headstone. This can be common with choosing the correct epitaph to inscribe on the headstone.
Some advice to support you if you are facing the above issues is as follows:
- Select one family member to make the key decisions regarding the funeral arrangements and post arrangements. This can reduce some of the issues associated with disagreeing about what your loved one may or would have wanted.
- Do not worry about taking time in making key decisions – this is natural as you will want to find a fitting tribute to your loved one.
- Inscriptions can be added to the headstone at a later date if you find that you are not able to choose the appropriate epitaph at the time. There are a number of common epitaph statements but you can also select a humorous or profound quotation that summarises the life of your loved one.
