Dealing with Loss – Our Advice

Losing someone is never easy. Dealing with grief is a long-term process for most people and everyone deals with the situation differently. Some people may feel anxious and some people may feel angry, it will entirely depend on your own personal circumstances. You are never alone and there is always some form of support out there.

Comfort

If you are struggling, it’s always important to reach out to the people you love in your life. Especially in the case of a family bereavement, consoling with other family members can really help as they will understand what you are going through. There are also support groups available in most communities if you need any additional support.

Routine

You should always try and continue your usual routine as this will allow you to distract yourself from bad feelings and thoughts. It can be hard to continue life as normal when something traumatic or upsetting happens but in many cases, this can keep you from slipping into bad habits or falling into a further state of depression.

Emotions

Never be afraid to tell people how you are feeling. There is nothing worse than bottling up your emotions as this can lead to further problems that may affect your mental health. If you need to talk to someone please do so. Whether that be a friend or a counsellor, they can provide you with that extra bit of support that will help you through the grieving process.

Health

From sleep to diet, it’s always worth keeping yourself in a healthy state. You will feel a lot better in yourself if you are eating well and trying to get enough sleep each night. It’s not surprising how much of a difference this can make to your wellbeing so we would always encourage you to make

Patience

It’s hard to get over a loss. Accept that things aren’t going to get better immediately but with time and patience, you will start to feel better. Acceptance is one of the hardest parts for most people when dealing with the death of a loved one, so don’t feel ashamed. Eventually, you will learn how to handle those emotions and feelings.

Remembrance

Find positive ways to remember the loss. Whether that be through charity, photographs, memorials or any other method, remember the good times with your family and friends. This has a positive impact on everyone involved and can get rid of the negative thoughts, even if it is just for a short while.
